In-Home Water Recycling: The toilet-top faucet...

Presented as a do-it-yourself project on Instructables (and through LifeHacker), the toilet-top faucet and sink is a brilliant design to twice-use water in the home. The only catch is that it needs to be understood carefully to avoid the natural ickiness of a faucet and a toilet sharing water! Here's the deal:

-Fresh, clean water is dispensed from the faucet to wash your hands...

-Then, that water drains into the toilet tank (not the bowl), ready for the next time the toilet is flushed.

-When the toilet is flushed, the water you had used to wash your hands the previous time is used, along with however much more water was needed to fill the tank.

See? Your hands are not being washed with toilet water - your toilet is being flushed with handwater! As a bonus, some environmentally conscious chemical company could develop a handsoap that doubles as a toilet bowl sanitizer! Even so, good luck explaining the whole process to your guests...

The reason why this is non-intuitive to the user is because the new water, for the washing of the hands, which water is being provided straight from the pipes in the wall, APPEARS to be coming from a visual object that is "THE TOILET" in the user's mind.

If the faucet was somehow CLEARLY separated from the "toilet" in such a fashion that it was obvious that the water was coming from the wall, and THEN going into the toilet, it wouldn't take much documentation or thought for the user to "get it."

Right now, it looks like the water is coming straight out of that thing where poop lives, and that's yuck.

Definitely something that could be fixed on the second-rev. This is a cute proof of concept, and thinking in the right direction, fo sho.

You're right on that one - if some magic were just employed to make the water appear to be coming from a different location, the "yuck" factor would be gone. Tubes and siphons should do the trick, yes?

A modern metal fence is usually very easy to care for and, in contrast to wood, does not require any additional piece of art. But you can still be provided with real person paintings in spite of everything click web site.
